FINAL PROJECT ACTIVITY REPORT
INDONESIAN FRIED CATFISH AND CHICKEN
“PECEL 帅哥 ( Shuai ge )”
This thesis presents a business proposal for college students aiming to
introduce Pecel Lele and Pecel Ayam, two traditional Indonesian dishes, to the
Chinese market. The proposal outlines a strategic approach for navigating the
complexities of entering the Chinese culinary landscape, including market
research, localization, branding, menu innovation, customer experience,
community engagement, and sustainability practices. With a focus on authenticity
and cultural exchange, the business aims to not only provide Chinese consumers
with unique dining options but also foster cross-cultural understanding and
appreciation between Indonesia and China. By leveraging their entrepreneurial
spirit and commitment to culinary excellence, college students can establish a
successful Pecel Lele and Pecel Ayam business in China, contributing to the
vibrant and diverse food scene while gaining valuable hands-on experience in
entrepreneurship. Indonesia and China share a long history of cultural and
culinary exchanges, yet Indonesian cuisine remains underrepresented in the
Chinese market. Pecel ayam and pecel lele are beloved in Indonesia for their
unique blend of crispy textures and savory, nutty sauces. These dishes are
typically served with fresh vegetables and rice, making them well-balanced and
appealing to health-conscious consumers. In recent years, the Chinese food
market has seen a notable shift towards embracing international cuisines. This is
driven by an expanding middle class with higher disposable incomes and a
growing interest in global culinary experiences. Southeast Asian cuisine, in
particular, has gained popularity due to its bold flavors and diverse ingredients.
Thai and Vietnamese dishes have already established a strong presence, indicating
a readiness for other Southeast Asian foods to enter the market. Furthermore, the
rise of food tourism has exposed Chinese consumers to Indonesian cuisine,
creating a latent demand for authentic Indonesian dishes back home. The success
of similar international food ventures in China highlights the potential for pecel
ayam and pecel lele to be well-received. The cultural similarities between
Indonesia and China, such as a shared love for rice-based dishes and communal
dining, further support the feasibility of introducing these dishes.
